How to prepare a comfortable playing environment with an SSD?
Have you ever had a stressful loading time when using a PS4®? If so, you may be able to resolve the problem by improving the performance of the internal drive of PS4®. Recent PS4® software has a large amount of data due to its high image quality and high performance, which results in a long loading time.
If you use an SSD, instead of an HDD, the reading speed becomes faster, and you can comfortably play PS4® software with a shorter loading time.
1. An external SSD is recommended for PS4®
For the early model PS4® and PS4® Slim, it is recommended to use an external SSD. Since both use SATA2 as an interface, even the internal HDD is replaced with an internal SSD, there is a limit to increase in speed.
1-1. Advantages of using an external SSD
・Easy to install
・Loading time can be shortened almost as much as replacing with an SSD
・ Cheaper than replacing an HDD with an SSD
1-2. Conditions when selecting an external SSD
When you buy an external SSD, please check if it meets the following conditions. If not, you may not be able to use as an external SSD for PS4®.
・ USB3.1 Gen1 (USB3.0) or newer
・More than 250GB
・ Less than 8TB
Please note that some software may not support an external SSD.
1-3. Procedure to set an external SSD as an expanded storage
Please follow below steps to set an external SSD as an expanded storage.
Connect PS4® and an external SSD with a USB cable
Startup PS4® and select [Setting] > [Devices] > [USB Storage Devices]
Select the [USB Storage device] and then select [Format as an Extended Storage]
2.Replacing with an SSD is recommended for PS4® Pro
It is recommended to replace the internal HDD with an SSD for PS4® Pro. If you use an SSD instead, PS4® Pro will be able to increase the reading speed, because it has a large storage capacity of 1TB or 2TB. Of course using an SSD as an external storage can improve the reading speed too, however replacing with an SSD is a better way than using an external storage, since the interface of PS4® Pro has been updated to SATA 3. Unlike PS4®, there is no limit to increase in speed when replacing the drive of PS4® Pro with an SSD.
The following paragraphs explain advantages of replacing an HDD with an SSD and how to do it.
2-1. Advantages of replacing with an SSD
・Loading time can be shortened
・File transfer speed can be improved
When the internal HDD is replaced with an SSD, you can play the game on PS4® in a shorter loading time than using an external SSD. Though depending on software, loading could be completed in about half the time required for the internal HDD. For those who want to play without stressful loading time, we highly recommend replacing with an SSD.
2-2. Conditions when selecting an SSD
When replacing the HDD with an SSD on PS4® Pro, please purchase an SSD that meets the following conditions.
・ 2.5 inches SSD
・Thickness of 9.4 mm or less
・ More than 500 GB
If above conditions are not met, you are not able to expect the advantages of an SSD.
Since the games save data be filled up quickly, it is better to purchase an SSD with as much capacity as possible.
2-3. Procedure to replace with an SSD
Remove the storage cover on the back of the main unit
Remove one screw and pull out the storage mounter
Remove the four screws from the removed storage mounter and take out the internal HDD
Set an SSD where there the HDD was
Tighten the screws of the storage mounter and attach in to the original position
Attach the storage cover and tighten the screw
Since the HDD and an SSD have different thickness, attach an SSD, slightly floated.
If the internal HDD has data, please buck up in advance, because the data needed to be transferred into the SSD.
Please make sure that an SSD is with 2.5 inches and the thickness is 9.4 mm or less. If not you may not be able to attach with the storage mounter.
・Summary: Get a comfortable gaming environment
Replacing the internal HDD with an SSD can give you a comfortable gaming environment. You may choose whether to use an external SSD or replacing the HDD with an SSD, depending on the types of PS4® and your purpose.
If you would like a cheaper and easier way, using an external SSD is recommended. If you prefer reducing loading time, it is better to replace the HDD with an SSD. In either case, you might be able to play more comfortably that using the original internal HDD.
If you are not satisfied with the current loading time, why not consider using an external SSD as an easier way?
