1. How to choose an external/internal SSD

1-1. Choose by capacity
The amount of data used is different among what kind of data you use, like as photos, videos, and game data.
For example, when using a computer for creative work such as video editing and photo retouching, the data size can be large. It is better to choose an SSD with more than 1TB.
When using an SSD for an internal storage of your PC, at least 20GB is required even only for the necessary system data like OS. Also, when using SSD as PS4® or PS4® Pro storage, it is recommended to select an SSD with more than 250GB for an external storage, and more than 500GB for replacing with internal storage because recent games have lager data sizes.

・1-2. Choose by connection type
There are several sizes for an internal SSD, such as 2.5 inch and mSATA. Most laptops have a 2.5inch SSD. If you want to set mSATA or M.2 SSD for a laptop, sometime it may not fit. Check the size before buying SSD.

・3. Case type or Plug-in type
HDD cases are divided into two types: case type and plug-in type, depending on how an internal HDD is stored. Case type stores an internal HDD in a box-shaped case. Since the entire HDD is covered, it is suitable for carrying in a bag. Also, some products have a built-in fan to prevent them from overheating.
Plug-in type get an internal HDD inserted from above into the base part (cradle) of the case. It is like charging a cordless phone handset. Since it can be quickly attached and detached, it is suitable when you need to replace multiple internal HDDs.
For both types, some can store one HDD and others can store multiple HDDs at the same time like two Bay to eight Bay.

・1-3. Choose by NAND
SSDs have NAND flash memory, and data are recorded on it. NAND is divided into several types; SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC. Each has different characteristics. Though, since SLC is usually used for very expensive products for business, it is not a realistic choice. For consumers, MLC or TLC is recommended. MLC is good at durability, while TLC provides good cost-performance.

Generally, SSD’s read/write speed is represented by read/write count of random data (random access: IOPS) and read/write speed of continuous data (sequential: MB/s). Though actual data transfer speed depends on a PC performance and how PC is used, basically the higher these value, the higher the performance. Especially, random access is directly related with data processing speed and has a great effect on how you feel the speed. If you prioritize high-speed data transfer, you should check random access.

– Is it compatible with the OS that you use?
– Does it comply with USB3.0 or later?
– Is it light and easy to carry?
– Is it secured just in case of being lost?
You should choose the one comply with USB3.0 or later because it highly affects the data transfer speed. If you often use an SSD outside, it is recommended to have a light and easy to carry or an SSD with a high security level.
