What are the necessary conditions of use?
A new game console “PlayStation 5 (PS5)” was released on November 12, 2020. The specifications have been greatly improved compared to PS4, such as 16GB memory and 8K output. In addition, the regular model equip an UHDBD (UltraHD Blu-ray) compatible optical disk drive (Digital Edition does not equip it). Although PS5 is already high-spec, it is recommended to prepare an external SSD for it if you want to enjoy games more comfortably. In this content, we explain why you need an external SSD to play PS5 comfortably, requirements of SSDs that can be used, and recommended external SSD products.
・1. Why do you need an external SSD for PS5?
PS5 main unit has a high-speed SSD that theoretically boasts a reading speed of 5.5GB/s. You may be wondering why it needs an external SSD. This content explains advantages of preparing an external SSD for PS5.
・1-1. Capacity shortage can be solved
PS5’s built-in SSD has a high reading and writing speed, however the capacity itself is just 825GB, and the free space that can actually store the game excluding the system area is only 667GB. Most of the popular titles in recent years have 50GB data or more, and titles exceeding 100GB are also sold by 4K texture packs. If you are a gamer who plays a lot of titles, you may run out of space soon.
There are two ways to increase the storage capacity of PS5, either by installing an M.2 SSD in the M.2 slot or by using an external storage connected via USB. However, as of the end of November 2020, the method of installing an M.2 SSD in the main slot to expand storage is not officially supported. Therefore, it is currently necessary to connect an external SSD to increase the storage capacity of PS5.
・1-2. PS4 games can be saved to an external SSD
PS5 is compatible with PS4 and you can play a wide variety of PS4 game titles on PS5 as well. However, PS5 game titles can only be saved on built-in SSD in the main unit, so you need to leave free space for PS5 game titles there. Since PS4 games purchased from the PS Store and game data for disc version of PS4 can be saved on an external SSD as well, you can save free space on the internal SSD if you install PS4 game on an external SSD.
・1-3. Loading time can be shortened comparing to playing on PS4
PS4 has three USB Type-A terminals that is compatible with USB 5Gbps (USB 3.0 or USB 3.2 Gen1). Since PS5 has a USB 3.2 Gen2 port with a maximum transfer speed of 10Gbps, the loading time can be shorten by playing PS4 games on PS5. Although PS5 has four USB ports, 10Gbps is supported by three Type-C ports on the front and two Type-A ports on the back. Please note that a Type-A port on the front is USB 2.0 (480Mbps) speed and does not support an external storage.
・2. Specifications of external SSDs that can be used with PS5
For PS5, there is a standard regarding an external SSD that can be used. Not all external SSDs can be used with PS5, so be sure to check the specifications before choosing an external SSD for PS5. The conditions for an external SSD that can be used with PS5 are as follows.
・ Comes with an interface of USB 3.0 (Super-Speed USB 5Gbps) or later
・ Capacity between 250GB to 8TB
Regarding communication standards, many of external SSDs currently on the market meet a condition. However, please note that an external SSD must be connected to PS5 without a USB hub, and it is not possible to connect two or more external SSDs at the same time. It is recommend that you have a large-capacity external SSD to play more games easily.
・3. External SSDs used in PS4 and PS4 Pro can be used as well
An external SSD used in PS4 and PS4 Pro can be used on PS5 by connecting it with PS5. If you transfer a game data installed on PS4’s internal HDD to an external SSD, you will be able to enjoy it on PS5.
・ There are also conditions when using an external SSD used on PS4 with PS5. Please check the following two points.
・ You must be logged in with the same PSN account on both PS4 and PS5
・ For game titles installed from disc, the disc must be inserted during play
・4. Our recommended external SSDs for PS5
Here are some our external SSDs that are recommended for use with PS5.
4-1. M.2 internal SSD replacement kit, 1024GB, NVMe compatible [LMD-SMB1024UC]
An M.2 SSD that supports ultra-high-speed transfer standard, PCIe3.0 connection NVMe, and can maximize high performance of USB3.2 Gen2. Currently, it cannot be used even if it is connected to the M.2 slot, but since this product is a replacement kit, it can be connected to PS5 as an external SSD. The combination of a heat dissipation sheet and a heat sink keeps an SSD at suitable temperature even after long-term use, so the transfer speed is unlikely to decrease due to high temperatures.
4-2. External SSD, Portable, 960GB, USB3.1 Gen2, Type-C [LMD-PBR960UCBK]
An external SSD with a leather-like surface treatment that makes scratches and fingerprints inconspicuous and looks beautiful. An LED is located on the back, and you can’t see the blinking light in use from the front, so you won’t be distracted during gameplay. It supports USB 3.1 Gen2 (USB3.2 Gen2) standard, and the maximum data transfer speed is 10 Gbps, which is about twice that of USB 3.1 Gen1.
4-3. External SSD, Portable, 960GB, USB3.1 Gen1 [LMD-PBR960U3BK]
This product also has a leather-like surface treatment that makes scratches and fingerprints inconspicuous, and an LED is installed on the back, making it difficult to notice the blinking light even during use. It supports USB 3.1 Gen1 and can perform high-speed data transfer.
4-4. High durability external SSD, Portable, 960GB, USB3.1 Gen1 [LMD-PBL960U3BK]
A shock absorbing rubber frame and a floating structure are adopted. Even it is thin with a thickness of 15 mm, it has excellent shock resistance and vibration resistance. If the SSD is dropped, your game data can be protected firmly. And the dustproof design allows it to be used even in dusty places. This product also supports USB 3.1 Gen1 and enables high-speed data transfer.
5. Conclusion Let’s prepare an external SSD for PS5s
With PS5, you will be able to play not only PS5 titles but also many PS4 titles. When playing PS4 game titles, there is also an advantage of shortening the loading time, so it is a good idea to prepare an external SSD so that you can enjoy the game comfortably on PS5.
